Some years ago, kiddies perusing the soft toy aisle received a lesson in discerning the abstract from the concrete. Someone had methodically removed teddy bears' fluffy innards, replacing the stuffing with hardened cement. Affixed to the concrete bears was the following label:

Unfortunate child, do not mistake me for a living thing, nor seek in me the warmth denied you by your parents. For beneath my plush surface lies a hardness as impervious and unforgiving as this World's own indifference to your mortal struggle. Hold on to me when you are sad, and I will weigh you down, but bear this weight throughout your years, and it will strengthen your limbs and harden your will so that one day no man dare oppose you.

The fact that something so familiar and over-photographed actually operates by way of shadowy, clockwork mechanical systems so exhilaratingly titanic, analogue, and, frankly, bizarre was an astonishing thing to learn. ... It's as if a huge stringed instrument has been wound through the basements of the city, a singing nervous system that hauls vehicles the size of small buildings up and down fog-shrouded hills.

Create a whole fiction world where you can be anything you want? That sounds like a pretty cool idea.
People have implemented that in meat-space as the city of San Francisco.

My Journey Log @ Journey to the End of the Night - San Francisco - June 2011

Oooh, nice tech! As usual, this was great fun:
- The faces of passers-by as 1,500 people take off from a city square at the same time
- Being pursued up and down the steep streets of San Francisco hoping not to be the slowest in my group
- Jumping fences and climbing across construction sites while a co-runner abandons his stuck shoes in the mud
- Being hassled by fake TSA agents ("please place your dignity inside the bin"), hugging trees, ambushing people with stuffed animals and exchanging sharpie-drawn knuckle tattoos ("BALLS LIFE"!) at checkpoints
- Meeting people while camping out at the bus stop
- Seeing the city from a million new angles
- Losing my phone just before the end :/

Cafe Gratitude: Menu

A cafe around the corner from our apartment: "Our food and people are a celebration of our aliveness."
All menu items are affirmations: To order a pizza and a vanilla shake, you'd say "I AM PASSIONATE" and "I AM ETERNALLY YOUTHFUL". Oh yeah.

Our home in San Francisco (Inner Sunset) for the next three weeks, starting Monday. At least I think that's the building.
