[DPR's defense attorney] Dratel argued that Ross Ulbricht had been set up—that his computer was vulnerable to being hacked while torrenting an episode of the Colbert Report through the library’s public Wi-Fi, and that Mark Karpeles, CEO of [now-defunct Bitcoin exchange] Mt. Gox, had the means and the motives (financial benefit by manipulating the bitcoin market). Dratel also argued that the USB thumb drive on Ulbricht’s nightstand that prosecution claimed contained backed-up copies of files from Ulbricht’s computer wasn’t a backup, but rather the origin of the files on Ulbricht’s laptop—that the thumb drive had been given to him by the real DPR as part of the set-up.

I want to use economic theory as a means to abolish the use of coercion and agression amongst mankind. Just as slavery has been abolished most everywhere, I believe violence, coercion and all forms of force by one person over another can come to an end. The most widespread and systemic use of force is amongst institutions and governments, so this is my current point of effort. The best way to change a government is to change the minds of the governed, however. To that end, I am creating an economic simulation to give people a first-hand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without the systemic use of force.
— Alleged SilkRoad founder Ross Ulbricht

Allegedly, he later tried to order the assassination of someone blackmailing him. (It might have been a bluff, though.)

Hacker News user kaonashi: "Seems like he found out exactly what would happen: The use of force would be wielded more readily by private actors instead."

(PS: I find ridiculous this line libertarian utopians draw between "use of force" by the government, ie. laws, taxes = bad vs. "use of force" by privilege, discrimination, social pressures, wealth etc. = not an issue.)
