On October 14th, right on time with the protests on the 15th, the wonderful Epizentrum was established as a new social centre & squat here in Vienna. Your's truly couldn't help but contribute a quickly assembled stencil, easily identifiable through the shared font. But why stop there? Yesterday the Lastenradkollektiv had their Solifest at Epizentrum, and since G.R.L. Vienna is largely defunct/on permanent hiatus, the Mobile Broadcast Unit was not properly maintained in years - it was time for the utility tricycle to find a new loving home with a self-organised collective. I'm glad to have contributed it to their already wonderful roster!

And now we're on a roll! Why not do a revival of the old projects we deemed boring after 3 years of too much repetition? Well, sure! Like all those years ago, we quickly gathered some good old friends to show Vienna some more of that bloated freedom of speech project ...

Thank you everyone for the wonderful night. It was good to return to a lost love for some time.

Gestern hab ich allen meinen Wirtschaftsblatt lesenden Freunden (also quasi meiner erweiterten Familie) ein paar persönliche Details aus meinem Leben ausrichten lassen.

Alles natürlich ein wenig verkürzt formuliert. Keine Sorge, von Soup tendiere ich nicht weg, ganz im Gegenteil: Der Suppe ging's schon seit Jahren nicht mehr besser – mit dem "Ding" war die Startup-Szene rundherum gemeint.

Es kommt allerdings bald eine große Nebensache dazu, von der wir eh schon viel zu lange nur reden.

Es hätte wohl weisere Worte zum Thema "digitaler Mensch" gegeben als den letzten Absatz: Ich hätt vielleicht eher von dem wunderbaren, immer noch so unausgeschöpften gesellschaftstransformativen Potential von Technologie schwafeln können, oder das ganze auf die Spitze treiben und den Transhumanisten raushängen lassen.

Aber so sehr das eher auf diese Soup als in eine Wirtschaftszeitung passt (irgendwie eine schöne Analogie zum Inhalt, meine Privatsphäre ausgerechnet auf toten Bäumen auszubreiten): Ich bin schon sehr froh, neben dem Fernleben, das den Geist entgrenzt (und das mich zu einem signifikanten Teil zu dem gemacht hat, der ich bin), in den letzten Jahren auch ein (immer) erfüllt(er)es Nahleben zu führen.

I've recently actually begun writing down my current working theory on how government ought to work... let's see if that will ever see the light of day.

Gestern war ich beim Freiraum-Vernetzungstreffen im Lobmeyr-Hof.

Rund 30-40 Personen haben darüber beraten, wie man das riesige Gebäude, einen schon länger praktisch leer stehenden Gemeindebau mit wunderschönem Innenhof im 16. Bezirk mit neuem Leben füllen könnte.

Ein paar der Ideen: Internetanbindung über Funkfeuer, Werkstätten zur Förderung der DIY-Kultur, ein Nähcafe, Tauschläden, eine Bibliothek, eine Imkerei, Platz für Flüchtlingsvereine, ein Band-Proberaum, ein Parkour-Trainingsgelände sowie freien Wohnraum. Ganz konkret wurden Elektronik-Workshops, Schnittzeichenkurse und Sprachkurse geplant und der Aufbau eines Kinderspielplatzes für die Nachbarschaft mit einer Hüpfburg besprochen.

Es lag Aufbruchsstimmung in der Luft – viele Menschen mit ganz unterschiedlichen Hintergründen wollten hierarchiefrei und selbstorganisiert ihre Energie und Fähigkeiten einbringen um aus einem "Abbruchhaus" (so ein Polizist) einen kreativen Freiraum zu schaffen.

Die Umsetzung all dieser Pläne, die zweifellos das Gebäude und das gesamte Grätzel aufgewertet hätten, wurde jedoch durch die polizeiliche Räumung heute früh unterbunden.

Schon klar – es handelte sich um eine illegale Hausbesetzung: Wer weiß, was langfristig aus den hehren Zielen geworden wäre oder welche Probleme aufgetreten wären? Ich bin alles andere als ein Anarchist und stehe dem Konzept einer Besetzung nicht kritiklos gegenüber – aber nach meinem Besuch vor Ort ist mir unklar in wessen Interesse es sein soll, ein nicht genutztes Gebäude im Besitz der Stadt ohne konkreten Anlassfall und ohne die Bereitschaft zu Diskussionen über eine mögliche temporäre Zwischennutzung räumen zu lassen. Das bringt der rot-grünen Rathaus-Regierung bei mir jedenfalls keinen Sympathiepunkt.

Die Menschen, die im Gebäude übernachtet haben, wollen wiederkommen – doch jetzt ist die Stimmung bereits konfrontativ aufgeheizt und es wird wohl so enden wie andere Besetzungen der letzten Jahre.

Beim Aufbauen und Umsetzen wär ich dabei gewesen, aber ich hab bei weitem besseres zu tun, als mich mit der Staatsgewalt anzulegen.

Sehr schade um all das Potenzial!

Oooh, nice tech! As usual, this was great fun:

- The faces of passers-by as 1,500 people take off from a city square at the same time

- Being pursued up and down the steep streets of San Francisco hoping not to be the slowest in my group

- Jumping fences and climbing across construction sites while a co-runner abandons his stuck shoes in the mud

- Being hassled by fake TSA agents ("please place your dignity inside the bin"), hugging trees, ambushing people with stuffed animals and exchanging sharpie-drawn knuckle tattoos ("BALLS LIFE"!) at checkpoints

- Meeting people while camping out at the bus stop

- Seeing the city from a million new angles

- Losing my phone just before the end :/

Half of my day: Speed Geeking at the ReadWriteWeb 2WAY Summit – the other half was mentoring at Seedcamp New York at Google's local offices.

Now four hours of sleep and I'll be on my way to my favorite city in the world.

- A dozen couples ballroom-dancing on the pier to some guy's iPod and speakers
- People wearing Puerto Rican flags as capes (there had been a parade earlier)
- Passers-by dancing to a street choir's impromptu performance of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
- A non-heteronormative assortment of intimate couples in the park
- A semi-pro (?) basketball game on a public playground drawing a huge crowd
- And many other scenes of general merriment

It felt like I had stumbled onto a movie set where everyone was an extra in some cheesy rom-com told to act as stereotypically happy as possible.
I think all of these activities might be forbidden by law and/or general grumpiness in Vienna.

Einmal geht's noch... im Kurier werden aus den "Unternehmertypen" der JW-Studie gleich "Menschentypen der Zukunft"!

So kommt man also in die Medien: Ungefragt in einer Studie erwähnt werden. Wen kümmert dann schon, dass die Information über ein Jahr veraltet ist... ausgerechnet Heute waren die einzigen, die (mit Lukas) Kontakt aufgenommen haben.

What a hackerspace should be

A hackerspace should be a place for people who share a roughly similar mindset – curious, driven, creative, do-it-yourself, more action than talk, nonconservative, not bound by norms and conventions – but apply that to different projects in different ways: open source, hobby projects, activism, art, teaching, commercial startups, etc.

On the other hand, there are countless events and places for people who use the same approach/do the same thing (for example: web startups), but with different mindsets and motivations (passion/profit/glamour/etc.)

Personally, I'd much rather spend time with random creative, passionate people of whatever discipline and persuasion than with random startup people (pitch events, startup drinks) or, say, social web enthusiasts (Barcamp, Twittagessen,...). With the latter the chance is much higher that our mindsets aren't really compatible.

That also means that hackerspaces have to be careful of being overrun by people with very different mindsets, because that kills a lot of positive feedback loops – although that's obviously a delicate balance to strike.

Stuff I kinda knew already, but that became clearer than ever to me today in a conversation with @esad...

Hope mixtape

The personal aspect:

A terrifyingly high number of people I like are going through rough times right now. At a loss on how to help when rational arguments didn't seem to be of much use, I tried making a mixtape of songs that I personally draw hope and strength from for one particular friend.

The much less important technical aspect:
So I made a playlist, but now what? Do I burn a CD, which I haven't done in years? Do I just throw a zip file up on RapidShare? While pondering what the modern equivalent of a mixtape could be like, I noticed that almost all songs were on YouTube (a mixture of official music videos, live concert recordings and mp3 uploads accompanying static images). But YouTube's playlist function felt too impersonal as well, and provided no way of including the lyrics, which were very important to me.

So I built this little playlist script that takes a YouTube URL and a SubViewer subtitle file (that I created using an online tool) for each track and formats them into an autoplaying playlist with synchronized lyrics, adding a bunch of flashy CSS3 effects – that some browsers will probably be unable to render.

I'm not naive enough to think this solves any problems, but if a single person out there finds even the tiniest bit of comfort from this, it'll have been worth the effort. To B. and everyone else: You're not alone with what you're going through. Please don't rob yourself of your future.

This. Was. Awesome. My favorite place in the world was full of current, hardly-ever-anymore and not-yet acquaintances. There was food for thought and for the stomach, sad music and happy music, intellectually and emotionally stimulating moments, and just as importantly also fuck-it-let's-dance — at least all that was the intention I hope came across.

Some dear friends performed: When we weren't fighting with Skype, Alex encouraged us to aim for the human singularity (using all human brains to their full potential) before we reach the technological one. @kyrah got us up to speed on what might turn out to be one of the most significant political events of our lifetimes. @boysoprano stood on stage for the first time in his life, and who knew his voice is that good? :). @moep spontaneously decided to show off his newly developed Gameboy music skills. @jooray livehacked great audiovisuals. Ben and his friend Christian made lovely cupcakes. @nex did something or other with DDR in the lounge… sorry, didn't catch it myself so I don't know how much of the initial plan was realized ;)

All contributors I didn't yet know – @claus, Sebastian, Ana, Tomas and Ulrika, all of whom I just randomly emailed (or was introduced to) a few weeks ago – turned out to be most wonderful people.

Late at night, a whole new group arrived from who knows where, started using blue tape like war paint and sang along to the DJ. And even the police came by to party in their own special way ♥

There were some unfortunate tech fuckups and delays, and my shipment of zines didn't arrive in time – oh well.

I'm sure not everyone enjoyed everything on stage as much as I did – I was actually really positively surprised by the interest shown. So many people I only vaguely know listening intently to transhumanist and political talks at what was advertised as a party for lack of a better word? So many people who had never heard her music (beyond a short sample at best) dancing along to Compute? Either of those is unusual, but both with the same crowd?!

It was a "party" designed to also appeal to people who don't usually party all that much, and I think that worked well.

The people I care about seemed to enjoy the night, and that made it so worth the effort!

I couldn't have done it without @oib, @meta, @fin, @kay, @jain7th, @stereotype, Lukas... the folks at Lomo, all the barkeepers including @tomk32, @wizard23, @nickless, @durchzug, @kallaballa and the cleanup team the next day. Sorry for not showing up before Monday morning: I was completely out of order, exhausted like I've hardly ever been after barely three hours of sleep the night before and all the preparations and last-minute things. Next time I'll budget professional cleaning.

"Standing on stage and being able to look at a crowd of people and say 'hey, I by all rights shouldn't be here, but as the result of accepting an opportunity here I am…', I think that's a huge life changer for me." said Dallas in the intro video, and that's how I felt as well. A few years ago I would never ever have imagined I'd be organizing something like this, and that so many great people would show up and enjoy it.

My Last.fm Gender Plot: I listen to more stereotypically female than male music, I'm older than most people listening to what I listen to, Dälek is the most macho artist I like and Patrick, Mirah, Kimya and The Blow are hanging out in a queer little group of their own all the way down at the femme edge of the graph (presumably eyeing Jónsi [edit: and even Dear Nora!] suspiciously over there in gender-balanced territory).

My social network on Facebook, as analyzed by the Social Graph app. I've always been a statistics nerd, and this is just endlessly intriguing.

How closely do these common interest groups describe me as a person? Does that fit with my self-image? Am I fine with the fact that those are the only people I hang out with? How much does it bother me that the main clusters here are overwhelmingly male?

If this graph tells a lot about me, how much of this data is public? (I don't mind, but others might.)

The green area between the various clusters is where the best friends are found. How much of that is cause – are people who don't fall into one obvious category more interesting? – and how much effect? Good friends tend to have connections to several of the clusters because I've introduced them to eachother.

Should it worry me that 90% of those people are in Vienna when I'm considering moving to the States?

On September 23, we took a cab in Santa Cruz. Our driver, sixty-one year old James "Jimmy" Baum, was an exceptionally friendly guy. When he heard we were from Austria, he told us about touring Europe as a jazz drummer several decades ago, fondly recalling playing in some big concert hall in Vienna. We had a pleasant chat, and at the end he handed us his business card.

Tomorrow we're going to need a cab again, so Philip decided to look him up – and we're shocked to find out he was shot and killed in a domestic dispute just a day after we met him! Holy shit.
